Brasília's air quality benefits from its elevated Central Plateau position at 1,172 metres, with the open cerrado landscape and consistent trade winds providing generally good background dispersal for Brazil's planned capital. Vehicle emissions from the EPGU and EPDB expressway corridors are the primary local sources, while dry season burning from surrounding Cerrado agricultural and conservation land between June and September generates severe PM2.5 episodes that represent Brasília's primary seasonal air quality challenge throughout the burning season.

Are air quality levels in Brasília based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
