Barreiras's air quality reflects its position in the western Bahia Cerrado agricultural frontier at 745 metres, with vehicle emissions from the BR-020 and the surrounding soybean, cotton, and corn agribusiness operations — making Barreiras one of Brazil's fastest-growing agricultural frontiers — contributing local sources. The elevated Planalto Ocidental position aids background dispersal, while dry season burning from surrounding western Bahia Cerrado conversion is the dominant seasonal air quality influence, generating intense PM2.5 episodes between July and October that represent Brazil's most rapidly expanding agricultural burning corridor.
