Barbalha's air quality reflects the Crato-Barbalha metropolitan area in the Ceará Cariri valley at the Araripe plateau base, with vehicle emissions from the CE-060 and surrounding agricultural and pharmaceutical botanical garden operations contributing local sources. The Araripe plateau's unique microclimate provides a humid forest refuge in the surrounding semi-arid landscape, while drought and Caatinga burning in the wider region contribute seasonal PM10 and the plateau's forested eastern scarp provides some clean-air buffering.
