Balsas' air quality reflects the southern Maranhão cerrado agricultural frontier, with vehicle emissions from the BR-230 and surrounding soybean and corn agribusiness operations contributing local sources. Dry season burning from surrounding Maranhão Cerrado agricultural conversion generates seasonal PM2.5 episodes between June and September, while the flat interior plateau generally allows reasonable wind dispersal on most days throughout the year.
