Arapiraca's air quality reflects its position in the Alagoas semi-arid interior, with vehicle emissions from the BR-316 and the surrounding tobacco farming and processing industry — making Arapiraca Brazil's tobacco capital — contributing the primary local sources including curing barn emissions during the tobacco drying season. The flat Agreste Alagoano terrain generally provides reasonable wind dispersal, while dry season burning from surrounding Caatinga agricultural land contributes seasonal PM2.5 variation.
