Açailândia's air quality faces significant industrial challenges as a major Maranhão steel and pig iron production hub, with the Gusa Nordeste and surrounding pig iron furnaces generating elevated PM2.5, CO, and heavy metals from charcoal-fired blast furnaces alongside dry season burning from surrounding Amazon deforestation. The flat Maranhão-Pará border terrain and calm dry season conditions allow both industrial and fire smoke to accumulate extensively.
