Tenterfield's elevated position near the Queensland border gives it a cooler, drier character than the subtropical coast, with granite country and open grazing land surrounding the town. Winter is the main air quality pressure point, as cold nights prompt widespread wood heater use that can linger under still, frosty conditions. Spring and late-winter bushfire smoke is a recurring risk given the surrounding dry forest and grassland, particularly ahead of the wet season further north. Agricultural dust adds a modest seasonal contribution. For much of the year, though, air quality here is clean and good.
