This mid-north coast river town's air quality benefits from coastal humidity and onshore breezes for much of the year, but like much of the NSW mid-north coast it is vulnerable to bushfire smoke from surrounding forested hinterland, a risk realised severely during the 2019–20 fire season. Spring brings a moderate tree and grass pollen season typical of the mid-north coast, while the extensive state forests and plantations surrounding the Manning Valley mean hazard reduction burns and occasional wildfire smoke are recurring seasonal considerations, particularly through the cooler months when burns are conducted.
