As one of Melbourne's fastest-growing outer-northern growth corridor towns, Sunbury's air quality is shaped by construction dust from new estates, traffic along the Calder Freeway, and open grassland pollen and dust from the volcanic plains that still surround much of the town. Being on Melbourne's drier northern fringe, Sunbury can experience more dust from exposed cleared land and building sites than the city's established suburbs, while its distance from the coast means it misses some of the bay's moderating sea breezes, allowing summer heat and pollutants to build more readily on still days.
