This major food-processing centre's air quality is shaped by its intensive horticultural surrounds, spray drift and dust from orchards and irrigated farmland, plus emissions from the district's fruit-canning and processing factories, alongside typical inland valley temperature inversions in winter. Spring blossom season brings a notable pollen contribution from the district's extensive orchards, while harvest-time truck movements and processing operations add seasonal traffic and odour. Cold, still winter nights typical of this inland Victorian valley can trap smoke and dust close to the ground until it clears with the following day's breeze.
