Isolated on the Gove Peninsula in remote Arnhem Land, Nhulunbuy owes its existence to bauxite mining, which adds a layer of localised dust to what is otherwise a clean tropical air profile shaped by steady trade winds. Dry-season months, June through October, bring the region's characteristic smoke from savanna burning across the surrounding bushland, sometimes mixing with mining-related dust on still days. The wet season, November to April, brings heavy humidity, mould risk, and cyclone potential instead. Short dust events can occur in the October to November build-up. Outside these patterns, this remote community generally enjoys good background air quality.

When is air pollution at its worst in Nhulunbuy?
Nhulunbuy residents typically notice conditions worsen during the dry season months, when deliberate and unplanned savanna fires across the Top End push smoke into town on the south-easterly trades. The wet season flips the script: less smoke, more humidity, storms and cyclone watches. Outside that window conditions are usually clear, so check forecasts if you have asthma or other sensitivities.
Are air quality levels in Nhulunbuy based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
