Guarding the entrance to Newcastle Harbour, Nobbys Beach and its lighthouse-topped headland sit right beside the port's coal-loading facilities, giving this stretch of coastline an industrial neighbour that beach suburbs elsewhere in the region don't have. Even so, the exposed headland setting catches a strong onshore sea breeze off the Tasman that generally disperses port-related dust and traffic before it can settle. Like the rest of the NSW coast, expect summer bushfire smoke and winter wood-heater haze layered over this otherwise breezy coastal air.
