Morwell's air quality carries a legacy association with the Latrobe Valley's coal-fired power industry, most notably the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire, which significantly affected local air for weeks. Under normal conditions, the valley's topography can trap wood-smoke and other emissions on still, cold nights, while summer brings the risk of bushfire smoke from the Strzelecki Ranges or Gippsland forests during dry, high-risk periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Morwell right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Morwell is good. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 13.8/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 PM (O3: 13.8/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Morwell?

When is air pollution at its worst in Morwell?

Morwell's air quality is most likely to be poor during winter temperature inversions, when the valley traps wood-smoke and industrial emissions close to the ground on calm nights, and during summer bushfire season, when smoke from the Strzelecki Ranges or wider Gippsland can settle into the valley. The town's coal-industry history means dust and emissions are a familiar seasonal talking point locally.

Are air quality levels in Morwell based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
