Moe sits in the Latrobe Valley, a region historically shaped by coal-fired power generation and open-cut brown coal mining, which have at times added particulate and haze contributions to local air quality, including during the notable 2014 Hazelwood mine fire. Surrounding forested hills bring summer bushfire smoke risk, while cold winter nights see a rise in wood heater use that can settle in the valley under still conditions. Agricultural dust from nearby farmland is a smaller contributor. Outside these industrial and seasonal episodes, background air quality is generally reasonable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Moe right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Moe is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 61.5/100. Pollution peaks around 8:00 PM (NO2: 61.5/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Moe?

When is air pollution at its worst in Moe?

Moe's worst air days tend to cluster around summer bushfire season, roughly December to March, when fires in the surrounding bush push smoke into town. Winter brings a quieter risk too: wood-heater smoke pooling on cold, still nights. Outside that window conditions are usually clear, so check forecasts if you have asthma or other sensitivities.

Are air quality levels in Moe based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
