This Tablelands agricultural town has a drier, cooler highland climate than the tropical coast, meaning dust from surrounding coffee, mango and avocado farming is a more prominent air quality factor here than the humidity that dominates coastal tropical towns. Winter mornings can bring cool temperature inversions that trap farm dust and smoke close to the ground, while the dry season generally brings clear skies with only occasional savanna burning haze drifting through. Being on the elevated Tablelands rather than the humid coast, Mareeba avoids much of the mould and humidity that affects Cairns and other coastal tropical towns.

Are air quality levels in Mareeba based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns.
