Longreach, historically a hub for the cattle and droving industry in central-west Queensland, sits amid vast semi-arid grazing country where dust storms are the dominant air quality concern, especially during drought when exposed, dry ground is easily lifted by strong winds. The region's very low humidity and sharp day-to-night temperature contrasts are characteristic of the outback interior. With little heavy industry and light traffic, background pollution sources are minimal. Outside dust events, the town typically enjoys very clean, dry air for the majority of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Longreach?
Longreach's worst air days tend to cluster around dust storm events, when strong, dry winds lift loose soil off the surrounding plains. There's also a delayed risk after wet spells, when the resulting grass flush dries and burns later. It's worth checking daily readings during that period, since the rest of the year rarely causes concern.
Are air quality levels in Longreach based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
