Local Environmental Conditions
Around this site in Grassmere, traffic is light and there are few concentrated sources of air pollution. Farming is another source: tilling and harvest raise dust, while fertilizer and livestock release ammonia that turns into fine particles. Open grassland and scrub can produce smoke during grass fires and some dust in dry spells. Winds here are fairly strong, averaging around 15 km/h, which helps disperse local pollution.
The cooler months, June to August, see more fine particles, as wood burning and traffic add emissions while frequent calm, cold mornings around 8°C keep pollution near the ground. By contrast, with summer temperatures averaging only about 20°C, ozone rarely becomes a serious problem. Wildfire season runs roughly from February to March, when smoke from fires, near or far, can bring hazy days and very poor air quality.

When is air pollution at its worst in Maes-Y Porth Soldier Settlement Monument?
The cooler months, June to August, see more fine particles, as wood burning and traffic add emissions while frequent calm, cold mornings around 8°C keep pollution near the ground. By contrast, with summer temperatures averaging only about 20°C, ozone rarely becomes a serious problem. Wildfire season runs roughly from February to March, when smoke from fires, near or far, can bring hazy days and very poor air quality.
Are air quality levels in Maes-Y Porth Soldier Settlement Monument based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 air quality scores represent risk levels, not direct air pollutant concentrations. Higher scores indicate higher risk.
Air Quality
| Good | 0-20 | Low air quality risk. Air quality is expected to be good, with low levels of pollution. |
| Fair | 20-40 | Generally low air quality risk. Air quality is expected to be acceptable, with some pollution present. |
| Moderate | 40-60 | Moderate air quality risk. Air pollution is elevated and air quality may be less favorable. |
| Poor | 60-80 | High air quality risk. Air pollution is high and air quality is expected to be poor. |
| Very Poor | 80-100 | Very high air quality risk. Air pollution is very high and air quality is expected to be very poor. |
