Berry sits a little further inland than coastal Kiama, tucked against the Southern Highlands foothills, which makes it more prone to still, cool nights that trap wood smoke close to the ground in winter. The town's dairy and grazing land surrounds keep industrial pollution absent, and background air quality is generally very good. Bushfire smoke is the main warm-season risk given the surrounding forested escarpment country. Ventilation is decent but not as constant as fully exposed coastal towns nearby.

Is air quality bad in Berry right now?
On 5 August 2026, overall air quality in Berry is good. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 16.7/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 PM (O3: 16.7/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Berry?

When is air pollution at its worst in Berry?
Set among Shoalhaven dairy country, Berry typically records its worst air during summer bushfire smoke events (December–March), when fires in the surrounding forests can blanket the town for days at a time. Cold, still winter nights bring a smaller uptick from wood heaters in the village centre. Plan outdoor events with a fire-season contingency and expect otherwise clear conditions.
Are air quality levels in Berry based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
