Benalla, on the Broken River in Victoria's Hume region, experiences the classic inland Victorian air quality pattern of good background conditions punctuated by seasonal smoke and dust. Wood heater use rises sharply in winter, and smoke can settle in the flat valley on cold, still nights. Surrounding cropping and grazing land contributes dust during dry, windy periods. Hot, dry summers bring bushfire smoke risk from nearby forested ranges to the north-east. With limited industry and traffic for its size, the town otherwise enjoys clean air across much of the year.

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
