Perched on the cooler, wetter Atherton Tablelands above the coastal plain, Atherton enjoys a noticeably fresher climate than the tropical lowlands nearby, with elevation helping disperse haze more readily. Air quality is generally very good, supported by consistent airflow across the plateau. The main seasonal concern is dry-season smoke, from May through October, when savanna burning and occasional agricultural or bushfire smoke can drift across the tablelands. The wet season brings high humidity and mould-prone conditions rather than pollution. Some build-up season dust appears before the rains arrive in October and November, but overall this is a clean-air town.

When is air pollution at its worst in Atherton?
Anyone tracking air quality in Atherton should keep an eye on the June-to-October dry season, when the surrounding grass and woodland country burns and smoke can sit over the region for days at a time. The wet (November-April) clears the smoke but brings humidity, downpours and occasional cyclones instead. The rest of the year tends to be comfortable, making this the stretch worth watching for smoke-sensitive people.
Are air quality levels in Atherton based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
