Framed by the Torrens River and Adelaide's ring of parklands, Adelaide Oval sits right beside the CBD yet still enjoys some of the cleanest urban air of any Australian capital, courtesy of the reliable sea breezes that sweep in from the Gulf St Vincent most afternoons. The riverside parkland setting helps buffer the ground from the more concentrated traffic found in denser city centres. Adelaide's Mediterranean climate keeps most of the year mild and well-ventilated, with the main seasonal exception being the bushfire smoke that can occasionally drift over the city during the hotter months from December to March.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Adelaide Oval right now?

On 4 August 2026, overall air quality in Adelaide Oval is good. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 16.7/100. Pollution peaks around 2:30 PM (O3: 16.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Adelaide Oval?

On 5 August 2026, air quality conditions in Adelaide Oval will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at good at 13.2/100. Pollution peaks around 2:30 PM (O3: 13.2/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Adelaide Oval?

A full day at Adelaide Oval is most likely to be affected by haze during the peak fire danger period of December to March, the main exception to a clean record. Beyond bushfire risk, steady sea breezes keep the air remarkably clear most of the year. Anyone sensitive to smoke or dust attending then may want to check conditions on the day.

Are air quality levels in Adelaide Oval based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
