Athens Marathon follows the historic Pheidippides route from Marathon to Athens through the Attica peninsula landscape, with pine, olive, and phrygana scrub as the main pollen sources along the route. The hot dry Mediterranean summer has largely ended by the November race date, while autumn grass from roadside vegetation and mugwort can still contribute pollen during the early weeks of November throughout this legendary route.
