Local Environmental Conditions
Built-up land makes up around 46% of the area near the center of Nyon, with a good deal of woodland. Close to standing water, lakeside trees such as willow, poplar and alder contribute to what is in the air. Common allergenic trees nearby include maple, oak and ash. Grass pollen is significant here, and plantain and pigweed contribute weed pollen.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and maple, oak and ash are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into late summer. The season closes with plantain and pigweed from late spring into late summer. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Nyon come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Nyon based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Nyon, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
