Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of Petržalka is a mix of built-up land and woodland, plus some open water. With the Danube River nearby, riverside trees such as willow and poplar along its banks contribute to the local mix. The leading allergenic tree nearby is maple, with ash and poplar close behind. Grasses and weeds such as pellitory and plantain round out the local mix.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and maple, ash and poplar are in full flower. Grass pollen follows, peaking in late spring and easing off by early fall. Pellitory and plantain flower through much of the warmer half of the year. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Petržalka come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Petržalka based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Petržalka, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
