Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of Valletta is a mix of open water and built-up land. With much of the immediate area made up of open water, local pollen production is limited, though pollen can still drift in from surrounding land. Common allergenic trees in the wider area include olive. Grasses, pigweed and pellitory growing in the surroundings are the main non-tree sources of pollen.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and olive is in full flower. Grasses take over in late spring and keep pollen in the air into late fall. Pigweed and pellitory bring a final peak from early summer into early fall. In warm, humid weather from mid-spring into early summer, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in Valletta come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Valletta based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Valletta, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
