Local Environmental Conditions
Built-up land makes up around 49% of the area near the center of Lindsay, with a good deal of woodland. Close to the Scugog River, riverside trees such as willow and poplar add to local tree pollen. Of the allergenic trees nearby, maple matters most, while oak and poplar also contribute. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside ragweed and plantain among the weeds.
Maple, oak and poplar lead the season in mid-spring, as temperatures climb to around 5°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Then come the grasses, strongest in early summer and fading by early fall. Later, ragweed and plantain keep weed pollen in the air from late summer into mid-fall. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Lindsay come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Lindsay based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Lindsay, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
