Local Environmental Conditions
The area around Glace Bay is a mix of built-up land and open grassland, plus some woodland. Trees are an important local pollen source, given how much woodland surrounds the area. Grass pollen is plentiful, while mugwort leads among the weeds. Street trees, private gardens and mown lawns add to local pollen in the more built-up surroundings.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in late spring. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Mugwort brings a final peak from midsummer into early fall. Warm, damp weather from midsummer into early fall also raises mold spore levels. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Glace Bay come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Glace Bay based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Glace Bay, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
