Local Environmental Conditions
The landscape around the center of Calgary is densely built up, with some woodland. The allergenic tree mix nearby includes maple, poplar and birch. Grass pollen is plentiful, while mugwort and pigweed lead among the weeds. Compared with most places, mugwort is especially widespread here, which makes it one of the key local allergens.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and maple, poplar and birch are in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. The most intense period comes from midsummer into early fall, when mugwort and pigweed are in flower.

Does pollen in Calgary come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Calgary based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Calgary, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 pollen scores represent risk levels, not direct pollen measurements. Higher scores indicate higher risk.
