Local Environmental Conditions
Around 55% of the area near the heart of Sankt Pölten is built-up land, with a good deal of woodland. With the Traisen River nearby, riverside trees such as poplar and alder along its banks contribute to the local mix. Among allergenic trees nearby, maple leads, followed by hazel and ash. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and plantain and mugwort are the main weed sources.
First to flower is hazel, in late winter. Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 5°C and maple and ash are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. Later, plantain and mugwort keep weed pollen in the air from late spring into late summer. By late fall, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Sankt Pölten come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Sankt Pölten based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Sankt Pölten, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
