Local Environmental Conditions
Sitting at the confluence of the Hunter and Williams Rivers, Raymond Terrace is fringed by river red gum and casuarina riparian corridors and floodplain grassland, with remnant coastal forest patches further from the rivers amid a landscape increasingly given over to housing and light industry. Paperbark wetlands and mangrove-lined tidal reaches occur where the rivers meet the Hunter estuary further downstream, reflecting the area's position at the transition between freshwater floodplain and tidal Hunter River system, while cleared floodplain paddocks support grazing and increasingly, industrial and residential subdivision.
At the junction of the Hunter and Williams Rivers, pollen season here runs August to January, with tree pollen from riverside eucalypts and casuarina beginning in late winter and grass pollen from floodplain pasture peaking October to December. Humid Hunter Region conditions can extend grass pollen exposure into early summer, particularly after spring rain flushes new growth along the riverbanks.
