Caracas's air quality reflects the Caracas Valley's severe topographic enclosure between the Avila Range and the coastal cordillera at 900 metres, with vehicle traffic on the Francisco Fajardo Highway and the extraordinary vehicle density and economic crisis-related infrastructure deterioration contributing local sources. The enclosed valley's poor dispersal under anticyclonic conditions, vehicle emissions from the ageing fleet, and infrastructure deterioration maintain consistently elevated readings, while Caribbean coastal proximity provides limited ventilation on favourable wind days throughout the year.
