Yuma's air quality reflects the Lower Colorado River valley's severe topographic enclosure in the Sonoran Desert, surrounded by the Gila, Chocolate, and Castle Dome mountain ranges creating one of the US Southwest's most enclosed desert basins. Windblown Sonoran Desert dust from the surrounding agricultural irrigation and bare desert landscape contributes some of the US's highest PM10 readings, while vehicle emissions from I-8 and border crossing traffic with Algodones, Mexico, add NOₓ in this hot desert agricultural border city.

Monsoon storms in July and August can either clear the air with rain or stir up dust ahead of the storm front.

Are air quality levels in Yuma based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
