Upland's air quality reflects the San Gabriel Valley's enclosed position in the Los Angeles basin, with vehicle emissions from I-10 and the surrounding residential and commercial character generating elevated NOₓ under persistent temperature inversions. The San Gabriel Mountains to the north create significant topographic enclosure, while the basin inversion traps emissions throughout much of the year and Upland's position at the valley's eastern edge experiences some of the Inland Empire transition zone's more challenging air quality conditions.
