Tulare's air quality reflects the San Joaquin Valley's enclosed basin position between the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Range in Tulare County, sharing the valley's California-worst air quality conditions. Vehicle emissions from SR-99 and surrounding dairy and citrus farming operations contribute PM2.5, while persistent valley inversions trap all winter emissions and summer ozone from the valley's combined agricultural and vehicle sources regularly produces some of California's highest readings alongside neighbouring Fresno and Visalia.

When is air pollution at its worst in Tulare?

Tulare sees air quality change through the year: the cleanest air usually comes in winter, when storms periodically flush pollution out of the basin, but from August into October, wildfire smoke can add sharp particulate spikes on top of the usual summer ozone. Coastal breezes offer some relief compared to inland valley locations that see heavier smog buildup.

Are air quality levels in Tulare based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
