Thousand Oaks' air quality benefits from its position in the Conejo Valley between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, where Pacific air from Malibu periodically penetrates the coastal valleys to provide cleaner air than the deeper San Fernando Valley or Ventura County interior. Vehicle emissions from US-101 are the primary local source, while the valley's partial enclosure by the surrounding mountains can concentrate emissions under temperature inversions when the marine layer fails to penetrate the coastal range passes.
