Santa Clarita's air quality reflects the Santa Clarita Valley's partial topographic enclosure between the Santa Susana Mountains to the south and the Sierra Pelona Mountains to the north, with vehicle emissions from I-5 and SR-14 the primary local sources. The valley's position at the northern edge of the Los Angeles basin means it receives the temperature inversion's pollution accumulation, while the Newhall Pass channels both pollution from the San Fernando Valley and occasional cleaner air from the Antelope Valley.
