San Clemente's air quality benefits from its direct Pacific Ocean coastal exposure on the San Diego-Orange County border, with consistent onshore sea breezes providing reliable maritime ventilation along the San Clemente Canyon coastline. Vehicle emissions from I-5 are the primary local source, while the coastal position provides significantly better conditions than the deeper Los Angeles and Inland Empire basins and the Camp Pendleton Marine training operations to the south contribute localised military vehicle NOₓ occasionally.
