Rancho Cucamonga's air quality reflects the Inland Empire basin's severe topographic enclosure, sharing San Bernardino's California-worst air quality with the additional influence of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail intermodal yards generating concentrated diesel freight emissions at the Cajon Pass gateway. The San Gabriel Mountains to the north create near-complete northern enclosure that traps vehicle and freight emissions under persistent inversions, and the Cajon Pass wind events provide periodic flushing of accumulated basin pollution.
