Pomona's air quality reflects the San Gabriel Valley's enclosed position in the greater Los Angeles basin, with vehicle emissions from SR-60, I-10, and the nearby Cal Poly Pomona and the massive Ontario-Pomona rail intermodal and logistics hub generating concentrated freight NOₓ and diesel PM2.5. The valley position between the San Gabriel and Puente Hills creates severe inversion trapping, while the Pomona-Chino corridor's industrial concentration makes it one of the San Gabriel Valley's more persistently polluted urban air quality environments.

Typically, the cleanest air usually comes in winter, when storms periodically flush pollution out of the basin, while from August into October, wildfire smoke can add sharp particulate spikes on top of the usual summer ozone. Coastal breezes offer some relief compared to inland valley locations that see heavier smog buildup.

Are air quality levels in Pomona based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
