Pittsburgh's air quality has improved dramatically since the steel era but remains influenced by the three river valleys' tendency to trap emissions under temperature inversions, particularly in winter. The surrounding Appalachian ridgelines limit dispersal on calm days, and although industrial emissions have declined substantially, the valley topography continues to concentrate vehicle and residential emissions.
