Moreno Valley's air quality reflects the Inland Empire basin's severe topographic enclosure, sharing the region's California-worst air quality conditions with the additional burden of the March Air Reserve Base flight operations and the massive Amazon, UPS, and logistics distribution center concentration generating some of the US's highest concentrated diesel warehouse and freight truck PM2.5 emissions. The San Jacinto Mountains to the south and the San Bernardino Mountains to the north create a near-complete topographic enclosure compounding the distribution corridor's emissions.

The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.

Are air quality levels in Moreno Valley based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
