Manhattan's air quality in Kansas benefits from the flat Flint Hills prairie providing excellent wind dispersal, with vehicle emissions from I-70 and US-24 and the Kansas State University campus traffic contributing the primary local sources. Agricultural ammonia from surrounding Flint Hills cattle grazing and tallgrass prairie operations contributes secondary particulate formation, while summer regional ozone from Midwest agricultural and vehicle sources is the primary warm-season concern and the flat terrain generally maintains moderate conditions throughout the year.
