Lake Elsinore's air quality reflects the Elsinore Valley's severe topographic enclosure between the Santa Ana Mountains and the Elsinore Escarpment in Riverside County, with vehicle emissions from I-15 the primary local source. The valley's near-complete mountain enclosure creates persistent temperature inversion episodes, while windblown lake bed dust when Lake Elsinore recedes contributes PM10 and the Inland Empire basin's broader inversion problem affects the entire southern Riverside County corridor.
