Irvine's air quality benefits from its Orange County coastal position, receiving cleaner Pacific sea breezes more frequently than the deeper Los Angeles basin inland areas. The primary concerns are still the broader LA basin temperature inversion problem affecting all of Orange County and vehicle emissions from I-405 and I-5, but Irvine's planned community design with substantial green space and its coastal proximity give it consistently better readings than the San Fernando Valley and Inland Empire.
