Indio's air quality reflects the Coachella Valley's severe topographic enclosure between the San Jacinto Mountains to the west and the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east, creating one of California's most enclosed desert basins. Vehicle emissions from I-10 and windblown Sonoran Desert dust contribute PM10, while summer heat drives ozone formation. The valley's topographic trap concentrates all emission sources under frequent temperature inversions.

When is air pollution at its worst in Indio?
Indio experiences a distinct seasonal swing in air quality. In short, the shortest stretch of clean air usually falls in the wetter winter months, whereas summer and early autumn bring the highest ozone levels, and wildfire smoke can spike particulate readings sharply from August through October. The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.
Are air quality levels in Indio based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
