Honolulu's air quality is excellent, benefiting from the powerful northeast trade winds that provide consistent clean Pacific Ocean ventilation across the Hawaiian Islands throughout most of the year. The primary concerns are volcanic emissions from Kilauea on the Big Island, known locally as vog, which can reach Oahu under southerly Kona wind conditions, and vehicle emissions from H-1 Freeway traffic through the enclosed Honolulu basin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Honolulu right now?
On 15 July 2026, overall air quality in Honolulu is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 65.6/100. Pollution peaks around 9:00 PM (PM10: 65.6/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Honolulu?

When is air pollution at its worst in Honolulu?
Honolulu's air quality follows a clear seasonal pattern: the cleanest stretches usually come in spring and fall, between the summer ozone season and the calmer winter pollution episodes, but hot, humid summer conditions drive ozone formation, especially during heat waves. Calm, cold winter spells can occasionally allow local pollution to build up before the next weather system clears it.
Are air quality levels in Honolulu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
