Hemet's air quality reflects the San Jacinto Valley's severe topographic enclosure in Riverside County, surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, and the Badlands ridgeline, creating one of California's most enclosed inland desert valleys. Vehicle emissions from SR-74 and SR-79 and windblown dust from the surrounding Hemet Valley agricultural and construction operations contribute PM10, while the valley's near-complete mountain enclosure concentrates both ozone and particulate emissions under the region's persistent temperature inversions.

When is air pollution at its worst in Hemet?
Like most US cities, Hemet sees air quality shift from season to season. Typically, the shortest stretch of clean air usually falls in the wetter winter months, while hot, sunny summer conditions drive persistent ozone problems, compounded by wildfire smoke risk into early autumn. Coastal breezes offer some relief compared to inland valley locations that see heavier smog buildup.
Are air quality levels in Hemet based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
