Glendale's air quality reflects the San Fernando Valley's partial topographic enclosure within the Los Angeles basin, with the surrounding Santa Monica, San Gabriel, and Verdugo mountains creating a significant pollution trap that concentrates vehicle emissions from I-5 and SR-134 under the region's persistent temperature inversions. The Glendale Narrows provides limited ventilation from the Los Angeles basin to the south, while the Verdugo Hills create additional topographic enclosure on the city's northern boundary.
