Fontana's air quality reflects the Inland Empire basin's severe topographic enclosure, sharing San Bernardino's California-worst air quality conditions with the additional industrial burden of the Kaiser Steel legacy site and the massive Southern California Logistics and warehouse distribution complex generating some of the highest diesel freight truck PM2.5 concentrations in the US. The surrounding San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto mountains create a near-complete enclosure that traps the combined vehicle, freight, and industrial emissions under persistent inversions.
