Fargo's air quality benefits from the flat Red River Valley of the North providing excellent natural wind dispersal, with prevailing northwesterly winds from the Canadian prairies generally keeping readings at low to moderate levels throughout the year. Vehicle emissions from I-29 and I-94 are the primary local sources, while agricultural ammonia from the surrounding North Dakota and Minnesota wheat and corn farming landscape contributes secondary particulate formation, and winter blowing snow events can temporarily elevate PM10.
